2008/2011 - Rehabilitation Project | Lake Okeechobee, FL

The 140 mile long Herbert Hoover Dike (HHD) around Lake Okeechobee, FL does not meet current dam safety criteria. In recent years, HHD has experienced a high degree of seepage under and through the levee, which could result in a sudden failure of the system to contain the lake water, resulting in loss of life, property and natural resources. In 2007, the USACE placed HHD on the Top 6 list of dams in the nation needing repair and has prioritized and budgeted more funding for HHD than any other dam safety construction project in the nation.

Task Order #3 - Belle Glade, FL

One of the main components of the HHD Rehabilitation Project is the construction of a cutoff wall within the levee that will eliminate the existing seepage through the levee foundation and limestone layers below.
The cutoff wall of Task Order #3 included the construction of a 500 ft demonstration section and four options totaling 3.2 miles.
The cutoff wall was constructed by the self-hardening slurry method, which included excavation through the embankment fill and soil with mechanical and hydraulic clamshells and in the limestone rock and sand with a Hydromill cutter to a depth up to 80 ft from the top of the dike.
Acceptance testing of the cutoff wall was performed at 28 days through verification drilling, which was spaced approximately every 200 ft along the cutoff wall.
Acceptance testing included: in-situ permeability testing, unconfined compressive strength testing of core samples and borehole televiewer survey.
The project was completed 12 months ahead of schedule meeting very high quality control and safety standards to the client’s satisfaction.

Task Order #7/G - Pahokee, FL

One of the main components of the HHD Rehabilitation Project is the construction of a cutoff wall within the levee that will eliminate the existing seepage through the levee foundation and limestone layers below.
The cutoff wall of Task Order #7/G includes the construction of three options totaling 3.4 miles.
The cutoff wall is constructed by the self-hardening slurry method, which includes excavation through the embankment fill and soil with mechanical and hydraulic clamshells and in the limestone rock and sand with a hydromill cutter to a depth up to 78 ft from the top of the levee.
Acceptance testing of the cutoff wall is performed at 28 days through verification drilling, which is specified as seven borings per 1,000 LF of cutoff wall.
Acceptance testing includes: in-situ permeability testing, unconfined compressive strength testing of core samples and borehole televiewer survey.

Task Order #8/H - Port Mayaca, FL

One of the main components of the HHD Rehabilitation Project is the construction of a cutoff wall within the levee that will eliminate the existing seepage through the levee foundation and limestone layers below.
The cutoff wall of Task Order #8/H is constructed by the self-hardening slurry method, which includes excavation through the embankment fill and soil with mechanical and hydraulic clamshells and in the limestone rock and sand with a hydromill cutter to a depth up to 65 ft from the top of the levee.
Acceptance testing of the cutoff wall is performed at 28 days through verification drilling, which is specified as seven borings per 1,000 LF of cutoff wall.
Acceptance testing includes: in-situ permeability testing, unconfined compressive strength testing of core samples and borehole televiewer survey.
